Personal Vehicle Tax

On December 16, 2010 Toronto City Council approved the termination of the Personal Vehicle Tax (PVT). As of January 1, 2011, residents who live in Toronto and own a vehicle will no longer have to pay the $60 tax ($30 for motorcycle/moped) per year when renewing their licence plate.
What you Need to Know about the Termination of the Personal Vehicle Tax
- Those whose renewals were due on or after January 1, 2011 are not required to pay the tax. If the tax has been paid (such as for those who undertook the renewal in December) it will be refunded by the City.
- Those whose renewals were due on or before December 31, 2010 are required to pay the tax. If a two-year renewal is purchased, the tax will be applied for both years, but the amount relating to a renewal year starting on or after January 1, 2011 (the second year) will be automatically refunded by the City.
- Vehicle owners eligible for a PVT refund do not have to apply. Those who qualify will automatically be refunded via cheque. PVT refunds will be mailed to home addresses by April 2011.
- Please contact us or call 311 if you have any questions relating to the cancellation or refund of the PVT.
